Description

Eastville’s St. David AME Zion Cemetery is a site for Long Island residents to learn about history and archaeology in their own backyards. The cemetery represents the growth of a working class and diasporic community of African American, Native American, and Irish immigrant residents in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The St David African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church was founded in 1840, to serve people of color who were segregated in Sag Harbor's Presbyterian church. The AME Zion church became an anchor for the growing neighborhood of Eastville in Sag Harbor. Its cemetery, founded in 1857, is currently under the stewardship of the Eastville Community Historical Society.

Here, you will find documentation of memorials and featured biographies of the people they mark, which will be added to share archaeological and historical research in spring and summer 2013.
